Ryszard Kaczorowski – born on 26 November 1919 in Białystok. in 1940 he was arrested by Soviet NKWD and imprisoned in Białystok, then he was sentenced to death, however the penalty was changed to 10 years in a concentration camp. He was transported to Kolyma in Siberia where he entered the Army of General Anders under organization. As a soldier of the 2nd Corps he completed the whole Italian campaign. After the II world war he stayed in England where he studied and worked. Ryszard Kaczorowski was a social and political activist working, among others, in the Polish Pathfinders’ Union. He was appointed to the People’s Council, the Council for Coordination of Polish Emigrants in the World, the Council for Catholic Aid Fund, as well as to the Board of the Polish Union. His many years of wide and intensive activity caused him to be included among the leading persons of the social and political sphere in emigration. When appointed to act as a minister for home affairs of the emigration government he established close contacts with the Opposition in Poland. On 19 July 1988 he took over office of the President of the Republic of Poland in emigration as he sixth and the last president representing the continuity of the authority of the sovereign 2nd Republic of Poland.

On 22 December 1990, President Ryszard Kaczorowski solemnly delivered the president’s insignia to Lech Wałęsa – the President of the Republic of Poland. President Kaczorowski signed and delivered the Speaker of the Senate a deed where he stated that his mission had been completed and that he had recognized the president elected by the People of Poland as the head of the country.
